John's story:

Created by Ann 8 years ago
John Fraser was born on Christmas Eve 1940 in Frimley where his Mum was for a short time during the war. His Dad was called up soon afterwards and later became a POW in Austria not returning till 1945. Fast forward to 2001 and Ann badgered him to get a PSA test, 'just to check' although he had no symptoms. Prostate cancer was diagnosed and radiotherapy followed, then cryosurgery in 2006 and later on hormone therapy. Meanwhile John made it his business to spread awareness of prostate cancer and the benefits of having a speculative PSA test. He became a fundraiser and media talker for Prostate Cancer UK and is one of the faces of the organisation's current marketing material. In 2014 he had the honour of representing men with prostate cancer at the Johnson's Paint Trophy Cup Final at Wembley Stadium. John had also been diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2009 and it was that disease that killed him after a short illness, in August 2015. His legacy is enormous: not only over £28000 raised, but many many men's lives saved or prolonged because of his campaign to promote awareness of prostate cancer.
